Ménière’s syndrome or disease is a condition where there is excess fluid in the inner ear. This results in a range of symptoms including
• Vertigo ( a sensation of dizziness and spinning)
• Tinnitis (ringing in the ear)
• Fluctuating or permanent hearing loss
• Feeling of fluid or pressure in the ear
The episodes often occur over hours or day and are separated by periods of no symptoms, although the hearing loss and tinnitus may become permanent. It may affect one or both ears and may run in families.
Whilst there is no specific test to confirm Ménière’s syndrome a diagnosis may be made after a careful consultation and exclusion of other conditions with your ENT specialist.
Most patients improve after minimisation of stress as well as salt and caffeine in their diet.
Some may require tablets. Surgery is rarely required.
